United States Military Cancer Institute

The US Military Cancer Institute seeks to improve the outlook for cancer patients through research on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Message from the Director

I welcome you to the United States Military Cancer Institute. USMCI was created to promote the cancer research efforts in oncology in the Department of Defense (DoD).

The Institute is a component the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Members of the Institute are military officers of the three services —Army, Navy and Air Force—and civilian DoD scientists. These oncologists and investigators are staff members at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, National Naval Medical Center, Malcolm Grow Air Force Medical Center, USU, the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute. USMCI is expanding its programs nationally by collaborating with other DoD facilities across the country.

Exciting new initiatives are taking place in breast, prostate and gynecologic cancer research. There are a large number of important basic science programs underway. Our BioSpecimen Network and Tissue Microarray programs will offer extraordinary research resources to our investigators and to colleagues in academia and the private sector.

Importantly, USMCI calls the superb quality of military medicine to the attention of military families. A high level of compassionate patient care, delivered in an environment of preeminent scientific competence, makes military treatment facilities an optimal choice for cancer care for military beneficiaries.

I thank you for your interest in and support of the United States Military Cancer Institute.

John F. Potter, M.D.
